Background

Economic growth is very crucial in bringing about economic stability among Islamic countries. Economic crisis that hits many developing Islamic nations needs to be addressed to ensure the Muslim ummah are not being isolated and the economic ties among the Islamic countries need to be improved. The Muslim ummah throughout the world own a huge amount of funds worth USD300 billion. This figure is anticipated to reach USD1 trillion in 2013. These funds are in the forms of deposits at banks as well as funds placed at baitulmal such as the zakah funds, sadaqah, and waqaf. Should these funds being managed efficiently, they will be able to improve the Islamic nations’ socio-economic affairs in particular, and will improve the Muslims’ economic situations in general, but they must be managed in accordance to the Syariah principles. With recent issues of subprime crisis in the United States and its contagious effects on the world’s financial system, together with the fuel and food crises, it is evident that the capitalism system has its flaws. This is an opportunity for economists to find other alternatives to solve these crises, and Islamic economics system is one of the alternatives.

In line with Faculty of Economics and Muamalat‘s (FEM) mission to make the Islamic economics and financial services as its niche areas, this conference is seen as the best platform to build up the faculty’s identity and to uphold the name of USIM.
