Establishment of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM)

Skirting the history of the establishment of the USIM has recorded its inception; the establishment of the Islamic University in Malaysia had started before independence. In fact, these efforts are not confined to the establishment of Kolej Islam Malaya (KIM) in 1956 but continued in the 1960s and 1970s. When the Fakulti Pengajian Islam (FPI) was established in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Islamic University establishing is slow but its seemly unstoppable there. Some classes, groups and individuals continue to discuss the need to establish Islamic University wholly owned by the nation. The political leadership and the events in 1996 have contributed to the establishment of the Islamic University in Malaysia.

The establishment of the USIM started 10 years ago in which the discussion on the establishment of wholly state-owned Islamic University was held on 25 September 1996. Among those attending the discussion were YAB Dato ‘Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak, as the Minister of Education at that time; Board of Directors. Tan Sri Dato ‘Dr. Abdul Hamid Othman, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of matters related to Islam, Tan Sri Datuk Dr Wan Zahid Mohd. Noordin, Director General of Education; Board of Directors. Prof. Dato ‘Dr Mohd Sham Mohd. Sani, Vice-Chancellor of SMEs; Board of Directors. Prof. Datuk Dr. Anuar Ali Director of Higher Education at the Ministry of Education; and Executive Director. Prof. Dato ‘Dr. Abdul Shukor Hj. Husin, Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Studies at UKM at that time. The caliber individuals have contributed a variety of ideas, suggestions and concepts that are so momentous that the establishment KUIM becomes reality. On June 11, 1997, the Cabinet approved the establishment of KUIM and its establishment has been gazetted on March 13, 1998.

To further enhance the image KUIM internationally, KUIM been converted into Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) on 1 February 2007. Now USIM continue to drive success in the areas of teaching, research and writing. Campus Development continues to give comfort to the students and faculty to go further especially the core areas of Islamic studies.

Vice Chancellor Y. Bhg. Prof. Dato ‘Dr. Abdul Shukor Hj. Husin has been entrusted with forming a new university in 1999. He received his early education at one of the outstanding school in Singapore, Sekolah Rendah Agama Al-Junid. He continued his studies at Al-Azhar University in Egypt in bachelor, master and doctoral degrees. With his background and strong professional, he is a candidate who is suitable for driving this university. Also helping him in the daunting task and this challenge is Y. B. Dato ‘Dr. Abdullah Mohamad Zin. He is an alumni of the Islamic University of Medina, Saudi Arabia and holds a Masters Degree from the University of Al-Azhar, Egypt’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Kent, England. Y. B. Dato ‘Abdullah Mohamad Zin is the academics who have expertise in the field of Da’wah, Sufi and Theology at the FPI, UKM while Dato ‘Prof. Abdul Shukor was looking for colleagues who can realize the establishment of a public university that is able to elevate the quality of Islamic studies at a high level in this country that is able to elevate the quality of Islamic studies at a high level in this country.

Joint administrators of UKM such as Tuan Haji Addenan Hj . Abdul Rahman, who later became the Registrar KUIM and Puan Hajjah Rohani Abu who later became the treasurer of the university, the four individuals who have started tasks in the office while on the 5th floor of the Faculty of Islamic Studies, UKM. Before the first admission of students in mid 2000, the university has appointed a number of academics and university administration to ease all the works. Among them, Mr. Jasmin Jaimon , Chief Librarian KUIM , who joined the leadership of the university.

In addition, some academics were appointed including some individuals who have been spearheading faculties, namely Tuan Hj . Alwi Yusoff (Functionary Dean Fakulty of Quran and Sunnah ) , the late Sheikh Salim Sheikh Salleh (Functionary Dean of the Faculty of Shariah and Law ) , Executive Director. Prof. Dato ‘ Dr. Mohamed Asin Dollah (Dean of the Faculty of Dakwah and Islamic Management) and Prof. Dato ‘ Dr. Muhamad Muda (Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Muamalat) , has helped provide curriculum for various academic programs and issues relating to police and university structure . While Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hj. Alias was later appointed as Deputy Rector (Student Affairs and Development) and has been instrumental in efforts to streamline the management of quality in university.

Development of USIM can be successfully implemented in close cooperation between the University and the Ministry of Higher Education. In the 8th Malaysia Plan, several buildings were completed including Building Faculty of Leadership and Management, Faculty of Syariah and Law, Main Lecture Hall, Building Information Technology, Chancellery Building and basic infrastructure.

With the work hard from Business Development Unit staff, Faculty of Economics and Muamalat, FPQS Building, library and trucks can be continued. USIM actively built a new building for the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Science and Technology.

Due to the latest technology, all the building in USIM has the complete modern equipment and advanced ICT. USIM‘s residents can enjoy ICT facilities in every corner of the campus, as USIM campus equipped with wireless to connect with the outside world through the internet.
This contemporary infrastructure will encourage citizens USIM to carry on to work hard for the success of the country’s wish to move forward in line with Vision 2020 continues to be achieved.
