Introduction
Biotechnology is a process that uses a
variety of scientific techniques to create ideal
individuality in plants, animals or microorganisms through
the use of genetic knowledge. Since early 1990s, the use of
biotechnology has been widely explored to develop new
methods especially to increase food productivity. Modern
biotechnology techniques have now allowed a more precise
development in crop and livestock varieties. Nowadays
biotechnology is in the forefront of research in Food
Science and it will always continue to affect the food
industry by providing new products, lowering costs and
improving the microbial processes.
Faculty of Science and Technology (FST),
Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia was set up on 1st
December 2003. In conjunction with the graduation of its
first batch of Food Biotechnology students, FST will be
organizing a Seminar on Food Biotechnology: Perspectives,
Challenges and Opportunities from 19th-20th
November 2008. This seminar is supported by Malaysian Institute of Food Technology (MIFT).
The organizing committee
hopes that this seminar would act as a platform for
interaction
and exchange of information and ideas among Malaysian
renowned food scientists and technologists. We also hope
that participants of this seminar would have the oppurtunity
to
unravel the current use of research and impending
development of foods produced through modern biotechnology
and at the same time discover new
knowledge on trends and updates on food
biotechnology in Malaysia.
