Background

In line with Vision 2020, where Malaysia aims to be a developed country, the government has estimated that 41,963 doctors will be needed. Based on the number of doctors graduating from both local and foreign universities, Malaysia will still be short of doctors by the year 2020.

As demanded by Fardhu Kifayah and the aim to make Malaysia as a centre of knowledge excellence, USIM established the faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences on 1 June 2004. Its pioneering batch of 29 students are SPM leavers with excellent results selected from 57 government funded Islamic secondary schools. This first batch of students had first completed a year of Tamhidi (matriculation) at Bangi. Now they are undergoing their first year at the Faculty which started on 3 July 2005.

Unlike the rest of the university counterparts who moved to Nilai, Negeri Sembilan in August 2005, the faculty moved next door to Menara B MPAJ after necessary renovations were carried out to improve the learning and teaching facilities as well as a good working environment for its citizens. This is to accommodate the students as their clinical years will be carried out at the nearby brand-new high-tech Ampang Hospital.
