NILAI, 26 November 2019 – A total of 2,629 graduands of University Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) received their respective Bachelor’s Degree, Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s Degree and Doctorate of Philosophy in conjunction with the 17th USIM Convocation Ceremony that took place for three days from 26 to 28 November 2019 in USIM’s Tuanku Canselor Hall.
This year, five (5) sessions were held beginning with the Opening Ceremony of the 17th Convocation Ceremony at 8.00 am on 26 November (Session 1), officiated by USIM Chancellor Her Royal Highness Tunku Ampuan Besar Negeri Sembilan, Tunku Aishah Rohani binti Almarhum Tengku Besar Mahmud.
Out of 2,629 graduands, 95 are recipients of the Doctorate of Philosophy, 89 Master’s Degree, 136 Postgraduate Diploma and 2,309 Bachelor’s Degree. This year’s PhD graduands are from 20 countries including Libya, Jordan, Iraq, Gambia, Finland, Egypt, Oman, Bangladesh, China, Yemen, and Singapore. Libya has the highest number of PhD graduands this year with 24 recipients, while Oman has the second highest number at 21.
USIM aspires and is committed to empowering the Islamic economic system by producing competent graduands and skilled workforce in the finance field. Thus, this year, the Convocation Ceremony produced a new programme of study, which is the Bachelor of Islamic Banking and Finance with Honours, from the Faculty of Economics and Muamalat (FEM).
“Integrated Graduands Lead Sustainable Development” is the theme of the 17th Convocation Ceremony this year. In conjunction with the first batch of Bachelor of Islamic Banking and Finance graduands, they have been taught to master the worldly sciences integrated with Islamic revelation sciences based on faith and Islam so that they can become leaders who are capable of setting the direction of the country, while maintaining the sustainable development agenda and developing world civilisation.
In conjunction with the Opening Ceremony on 26 November 2019, Her Royal Highness Tuanku Chancellor conferred the Honorary Degree, Doctor of Philosophy in Da’wah and Islamic Management to Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Abdul Razak. He is the former Chairperson of USIM Board of Directors and previous holder of the Islamic Leadership Academic Chair and Principal Fellow at the Faculty of Leadership and Management (FKP) at USIM. Meanwhile, the Honorary Master’s Degree, Da’wah and Islamic Management was conferred to Tuan Haji Addenan Haji Abd. Rahman, the first Registrar of USIM, which at that time was known as KUIM (from 2000-2009).
USIM’s outstanding students also received awards in Session 1 for the Royal Education Award (Jaya Cemerlang Medal), which was awarded to Nurul Mukminah Muhammad Suzuri, Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, while the second recipient is Zati Nazifah Abdul Rahim, Bachelor of Sunnah Studies With Information Management With Honours from the Faculty of Quranic and Sunnah Studies.
The Chancellor’s Award recipients are Sharifah Thahirah Syed Mustafa, Bachelor of Arabic and Communication with Honours from the Faculty of Major Language Studies and Idris Ismail, Doctor of Philosophy in Communication (Postgraduate) from the Faculty of Leadership and Management, while the Vice-Chancellor’s Gold Medal was awarded to Syafiqah Mohammad Rushdi, Bachelor of Fiqh and Fatwa with Honours from the Faculty of Shariah and Law.
Awards of excellence were also presented at the same event to outstanding graduands in academic and co-curricular activities. Among them are the University Book Award, Faculty Book Award, Co-Curriculum Award, Tun Azmi Foundation Award, Malaysian Press Institute Award, Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia Award, Counselling Excellence Award, Dato’ Dr. Abdul Halim Ismail Muamalat Excellent Award, Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Abdul Shukor Hj. Husin Award, The 3M Company Award (Best Student Award), The 3M Company Award (Best Clinical Award), The 3M Company Award (Best Research Award) and Special Award for Excellence.
USIM Convocation Festival was also held and enlivened by visitors’ presence at the Convocation Festival Site. The Convocation Festival, helmed by USIM Student Representative Council, provided various activities such as scientific forums and talks, artist music night, e-sports carnival and open futsal tournament, sales booths, the final stage of the debate among IPTs in Nilai and the Nocturnal 4.0 run that opened the Convocation Festival on 23 November, with more than 1200 participants taking part in the five-kilometre run within the USIM campus.
