NILAI, Januari 6, 2019 – Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Rushdan Mohd Jailani has been appointed as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) for a period of three years beginning 1 January 2019 until 31 December 2021. He succeeded Professor Dato’ Dr. Hassan Basri Awang Mat Dahan whose appointment period ended on 31 December 2018.

Rushdan made history when he became the first USIM staff to be appointed as a Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) in USIM. He holds a Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from the University of Exeter, United Kingdom and he was selected to fill the position as his leadership qualities shone through during his excellent execution of many management duties and administration tasks.

In an interview with him, Rushdan shared about his goal to drive the culture of excellence among USIM students and alumni to uphold the image of USIM locally and internationally.

In general, influential and successful students and alumni of a particular university would be the benchmark to indicate its success as an education institute. This is because in the context of universities, alumni is one of the most important stakeholders to uphold the image of their alma mater. Other than that, Rushdan also aims to create a culture of giving back to the university either through endowments, expertise, academic development, character-building programs for students, collaboration, promotion, and others.

Besides that, he also wants to focus on the outcome of the Integration of Naqli and Aqli Knowledge Graduate Model (Model Graduan Integrasi Ilmu Naqli dan Aqli  or GIINA) in USIM, and would like to enhance the students’ competencies in three main aspects which are holistic, balanced, and entrepreneurial. This goal will be aligned with the agenda to elevate the status of knowledge and to perfect the manners of USIM students.

Rushdan added, ”Insya-Allah, I will devise various strategic moves to maximise the potential of USIM students to be more proactive and positive so that they can face challenges at the global level.”

Rushdan has vast leadership experience from previous responsibilities. The true-blue Perakian had formerly served as the Director of USIM’s Centre for Quality Assurance, Policy and Academic Excellence (QAPEX) (April – August 2018), Deputy Director of Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT), Ministry of Higher Education (2015 – 2017), Director of Asian Centre of Research for Drug Abuse (ACREDA) (2012 – 2015), Dean of the Faculty of Leadership and Management, USIM (2010 – 2012), Deputy Dean of Academic and Research (2008 – 2010), and the Head of Dakwah Program and Islamic Management (2008 – 2010).

Even though Rushdan has been entrusted with higher leadership positions, his success in the academic line is impeccable. He is also active in writing, research, and innovation at national and international level in multiple fields including Science and Islam Integration, Drugs Treatment and Rehabilitation Based on Islamic psychospiritual therapy, Contemporary Dakwah Issues, Spiritual Comparative, and Higher Education Leadership. Until today, Rushdan is an affiliated member of the Harvard Business School in USA in the field of leadership and management since 2016.

Rushdan has also contributed a lot in the development of academic and institution leadership training module for higher education institutes in Malaysia, and has also been involved actively in giving leadership training based on Values (Qalbu) and academic leadership to management and administration teams from public and private universities in this country.

All the members of USIM’s management team would like to congratulate Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Rushdan again on this appointment and look forward to be working with him to contribute to the success of USIM as a ’Kampus Barakah’ (blessed campus) and to enhance the roles and participation of USIM alumni in giving back to their alma mater.
