CAMBODIA, August 25, 2016 – A total of 15 club members of Global Islamic Volunteers (GIV) from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) went to Cambodia to  provide community service to the residents and underprivileged students.
With the theme “Knowledge Without Borders”, the 6-day program took place in Chiro Village, Cambodia.
Mumtaz Ahmad Naji Mohamed which leads the initiative said that the volunteering program does not only expose and provide the students with the customs and cultures from the Southeast Asian country but it also trains the students to master a variety of soft skills, among which are in the aspects of communication skills and teamwork skills.
“Many volunteering activities were carried out with the local community such as constructing a toilet whereby we build bathrooms for the Chiro villagers to use.”
“The collected funds and donations were given to the villagers to facilitate and ease the burden they carry.”
“Besides building the bathrooms, we also became English teachers for the students, teaching them the four main components of English, which are spelling, reading, grammar, and vocabularies,” she said.
“Apart from teaching English, we also share with them a science experiment of an erupting volcano, as well as teaching them how to brush teeth properly and the seven-steps of hand washing,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Program Director Siti Sarah Azahar said, the learning moduls were prepared by the team.
“The six-day program went smoothly and was highly welcomed by the villagers.”
“Overall, positive responds were given by the students with a sense of satisfaction over the activities we had organized for them.”
She added that the exchange of traditional food recipes between Cambodia and Malaysia was one of the special modules prepared.
“We introduced them the all-time favorite Malaysian traditional food nasi lemak while they taught us their original recipe of chicken curry which is totally different from our Malaysian recipe.” she said.
They stopped by at Central Market in the middle of Phnom Penh city and bought some souveniers before leaving home.
