NILAI, MARCH 14, (Tuesday) – The dynamic and rapidly expanding roles and functions of universities have led to the management and professional groups within the universities to take on bigger responsibilities.

As administrators in universities, this group can no longer remain at the phase of spreading awareness about their universities’ current policies, but they must have the courage to become agents of change in a new scenario in order to achieve more effective governance.

This proposition was put forward by the Registrar of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Muhammad Haizuan Roazali, in his speech when inaugurating the seminar “PRAGMATIS USIM 2.0 : Sharing of Best Practices in the Management of Universities”. The seminar is being held for two days starting today at the Main Lecture Hall, Faculty of Quran and Sunnah Studies, USIM.

“At one point of time, universities, as institutions where various academicians gathered, played the role of points of reference for leaders and the society to acquire truth. The demands of the surrounding environment, the passing of time and their growth in numbers have expanded the function of universities to also become the nation’s formulator and implementer of policies. Here, the role of university administrators has become bigger.”

“Therefore, university administrators must equip themselves with knowledge and expertise to ensure that the decisions they make are no longer based on assumptions, but on considerations of fact, research and valid evidence. At this level, university administrators are not only capable of making the best decisions according to their capacity but should be able to impart advice to the decision-makers by giving clear and sustainable views” he said.

The seminar PRAGMATIS USIM 2.0 was organised by Persatuan Pegawai Tadbir dan Ikhtisas USIM with the objective of providing a platform for university officers to table their analytical and academic paper work. It also provides an opportunity for the sharing of best practices in management which can be inculcated as the culture in their respective universities.

Two keynote addresses and 15 series of paperwork presentations on various university-related issues will form the agenda for the two-day seminar, among others human resource management, finance, academic, student affairs, internationalisation, research and innovation. A total of 150 participants are taking part in this seminar, made up of administrators of public universities such as Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu and USIM.
