NILAI – Starting with just one pot of bubur lambuk in 2013, cooked collaboratively to share blessings with the campus community during Ramadan by the Sports Centre of the Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), the surrounding community can now also enjoy this traditional dish as an iftar meal.

This year, 2,400 packs of bubur lambuk were successfully prepared by the Sports Centre on Wednesday for the USIM Community Bubur Lambuk Distribution Program, to be shared with the local community, mosques, and uniformed personnel in Nilai as well as USIM staff and students.

According to the Director of the Sports Centre, Nur Ekmal Buhary, the preparation of bubur lambuk as a traditional Ramadan dish continues to be a collaborative effort from raw material procurement and cooking to packaging and distribution to the local community.

“Starting from a small scale with one pot in the first year to four large pots this year, the financial cost of about RM4,000.00 for preparing the bubur lambuk is funded by various contributions from within and outside the university. We receive many donation requests but must refuse some due to logistical, manpower, and time constraints,” he said.

“This year, we also managed to prepare a pot of black glutinous rice porridge to distribute along with the bubur lambuk. Around 100 volunteers from the staff and students collaborated over two days, on Tuesday and Wednesday, to prepare the dish.”

“Distributions to the community were organized through local residents’ associations and mosque committees near the campus, including Desa Jati, Taman Anggerik, and Desa Kolej. Uniformed personnel at the Nilai Police Station and Fire Station also received shares. Insha-Allah, next year we aim to further increase the quantity of bubur lambuk to benefit a larger community,” he added.

The USIM 2024 Bubur Lambuk Community Distribution and Collaboration Program received support and cooperation from the Student Affairs Centre, Centre of Soft Skills Development, Department of Development and Facilities Management, Koperasi Kakitangan USIM, Persatuan Pegawai Tadbir dan Ikhtisas (PRAGMATIS), Student Recreation Sports Secretariat, and the USIM Student Representative Council. Also contributing were KRT Surau Ar Raudah Desa Jati, Yakult, Extrajoss, and Nuaim Corporation.

Meanwhile, in conjunction with the distribution of bubur lambuk starting at 4:00 p.m. at the Tunku Najihah Sports Complex, a “Balik Kampung” and Traffic Safety Campaign for Hari Raya Aidilfitri was launched by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Sharifudin Md Shaarani. This campaign, a joint initiative with the Shariah Compliance, Integrity, Risk Management, and Occupational Safety and Health Centre (SCIROSH), Security Department, and the Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ), also included the distribution of free helmets.
