NILAI, February 17, 2020 – To further extend the scope of the zakat distribution to students, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) Pusat Wakaf and Zakat (PWZ) has launched a new initiative for charity assistance under the asnaf excellence project, the Barakah Scholarship Award (ABB).

This award is given to one recipient for each faculty who achieved excellent academic results of CGPA 3.5 and above and other requirements. ABB recipients will receive a monthly donation of RM300 towards the end of their studies and a RM200 book voucher.

”USIM would like to express a thank you note to the charity donors among USIM staff and corporate institutions. USIM will ensure that the zakat is distributed to help ease the financial burden of the ASIM group,” said YBhg. Professor Dr. Mohamed Ridza Wahiddin, Vice-Chancellor of USIM in his inaugural address.

According to Prof. Madya Dr. Mushaddad Hasbullah, Director of PWZ, USIM’s success in establishing the ABB was the result of regular donations by USIM employees through pay cuts as well as corporate contributions such as Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), Etiqa Takaful, Tabung Haji and others. It turns out that all of these contributions have a huge impact on ABB recipients and other stakeholders.

”PWZ established ABB as a new initiative to distribute zakat to asnaf under the asnaf excellence project. PWZ believes this ABB scholarship will not only help reduce the financial burden of students but also enhance their academic excellence, ”he added. Mushaddad.

The council also handed over book vouchers to 400 aspiring faculty at USIM totaling RM100 to each recipient. This grant is the result of a charity donation of RM750,000 in 2019 from the Hajj Fund under the Iqra Program.

In light of the developments in 2019, USIM through PWZ has distributed a charity of RM2,276,815.00 to over 2000 indigenous and poor students in USIM.

PWZ hopes that the waqf and zakat funds will be enhanced through ongoing donations from staff, the community and corporate institutions. This is to ensure that PWZ is able to provide ongoing zakat distribution to USIM.
