NILAI, 2 April 2018 – The organization of ASEAN Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) Competition organized its 6th event with its theme, “Poise is the Essence of Youth Transformation” held seven main activities on the day. The program, which began 30 March to 2 April, brought participants together for Bilingual Debate (English and Arabic) Competition, Quran Recitation Competition and Nasyid Competition. There were two new competitions introduced in which the organizer had invited Southeast Asia Secondary Schools to take part into the event namely; the Archery Competition and the Arabic Language Debate Competition.

The objective of this occasion is to allow participants in gaining exposure of participating, while bonding amongst contestants in international competitions. This event as well would be the platform of underlining and expounding the features of Islamic knowledge, especially amongst the various ASEAN Muslim participants enrolled in assorted ways held in the competitions.

Prof. Dato Dr. Hassan Basri Awang Mat Dahan, USIM’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, claimed that; ASEAN HEIs Competition 2018 entries this time was very encouraging as the number of participants reached in total of 235 participants. There were 159 from Malaysia, and international participants were 76 people.

The participation was from 24 institutions of 12 national and 12 international tertiary institutions including Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei. On top of that, there were 8 secondary schools joined along as 5 national and 3 international schools. In addition, there were 84 judges from Malaysia, and other international countries that had involved for the event.

“The purpose of organizing this competition is to strengthen the relationship among all participants from various countries and institutions. This would provide the opportunity to share fruitful knowledge and expand networks between us. It is vital as this leads to the development of a more solid spiritual and intellectual ummah,” he added, in representing USIM’s Vice Chancellor.

Ultimately, USIM won the Bilingual Debate Competition and became the overall winner for the new competition held this year; men’s and women’s individual Archery Competitions. Also, USIM attained as the first runner-up for Qari (Male) and Nasyid Competitions.

For the Closing Ceremony of the ASEAN HEIs Competition 2018, it was inaugurated by Tan Sri Dr. Abdullah Md Zin; the Religious Advisor of the Honourable Prime Minister of Malaysia.
