NILAI, April 10, 2020– Having produced hand sanitizer and face shield for the frontliners especially healthcare personnel, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) is now producing personal protective clothing (PPE). This noble effort is being led by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences USIM and the staff of the Klinik Pakar Kesihatan Kesihatan Universiti (KPKU) with a target of 4500 PPE units to be completed by the end of April.
USIM’s PPE-generating project consisting of gowns, head covers and boot covers began on April 2 in stages. According to Associate Professor Dr Azlina Mokhtar Ophthalmologist as the Project Leader, she was called on to mobilize this concern and wanted to help her colleagues in the frontline who are dealing with the lack of PPE supplies in the hospital. Thus, the initial effort was started by collecting financial donations and forming a team of volunteers consisting of USIM FPSK medical lecturers and KPKU staff to sew the PPE.
As a result of this initial effort, 470 units of PPE were successfully produced and donated to Ampang Hospital. Not stopping there, with the support received from the University Management, the USIM PPE Project team wants to generate more PPE to be donated to the front liners.
“Currently USIM is producing PPE for the second batch of 1000 units and we are partnering with local sewing companies i.e Kamoora Boutique Entreprise and Pookal Industry Sdn Bhd. It runs smoothly on schedule and will be donated to Ampang Hospital, Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital, Temerloh and Port Dickson Hospital. These three hospitals are also the Teaching Hospitals for USIM medical students. ”
“In addition to contributing PPE needs to the Teaching Hospitals, we are also in the early stages of developing a third batch of PPEs of 1000 units to meet the needs of Tuanku Jaafar Hospital (HTJ), Seremban. Our volunteers are completing them at the USIM Sewing Incubator Center under the auspices of the University Entrepreneur Center, ”he added.
USIM targets another 2000 units of PPE to be produced for the fourth batch and will be distributed not only to USIM and HTJ Teaching Hospital, but will also be used to meet the needs of USIM Health Specialist Clinics and USIM Hemodialysis Center in Nilai, health clinics and district health centers.
A total of RM67,000 was allocated to this noble charity work which is and partly funded through donations from the Negeri Sembilan Dato’-Dato ‘Council, Negeri Sembilan Municipal Foundation, USIM COVID-19 Fund, USIM Professor Congregation and individual donations among FPSK lecturers and the Commission’s own staff.
