NILAI, April 8, 2020 – The team spirit and caring nature demonstrated by the Specialist Doctors of the Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia Specialists Clinic (USIM) and lecturers of Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK) should be exemplary. With funds raised by the project team involved, they have mobilized PPE sewing operation to supply to hospitals and clinics in need. The idea came to light on April 1, and the work began on the morning of April 2, 2020.
To date, the team has managed to produce 299 sets of PPEs in its first phase and have already delivered to Ampang Hospital yesterday.
According to Associate Professor Dr Azlina Mokhtar an Ophthalmologist as Project Leader, she heard complaints from colleagues who do not have sufficient PPE supplies at Ampang Hospital, and had non-woven cloth material but did not have enough manpower to sew PPE equipment. This sparks our desire to go forward to proceed with this relief project , and within 24 hours the idea came to light to supply PPE with the fabric material received from Ampang Hospital for this phase.
“The fundraising was launched by Associate Professors Dr Maizatul Azma Masri and Dr Nor Eyzawiah Hassan among friends and relatives to buy other sewing materials.”
“We are thankful the head tailor is USIM’s forensic expert who is talented at pattern making and sewing. What is more interesting is with the online tutorials, we started sewing with the help of family members until the weekend to get the sewing done for the first phase, ”said Dr Azlina again.
“The second phase of the project targets 1000 units in collaboration with the local sewing team of Kamoora Boutique Enterprise and Pookal Industry Sdn Bhd. Phase 3 is expected to form a joint venture with the University Entrepreneurship Center (PKUU), the Public Relations and Industrial Relations Center (PLiMJI) and the USIM Awqaf and Zakat Center with a target of 2000 units sewn, ”she added. .
She said the PPE uniforms will be distributed to USIM Health Specialists Clinics including USIM Haemodialysis Center in Nilai as well as several USIM Teaching Hospitals, Ampang Hospital, Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Temerloh Hospital, Port Dickson Hospital as well as several Health Clinics and District Health Centers as well as to hospitals in critical need of supplies such as Seremban Hospital.
