KOTA BHARU, Feb 12, 2017  – The alumni of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), now totaling to more than 14,000, can assist the institution through waqf in the form of financial assistance, the transfer of knowledge, or the sharing of experience with the current students, for example in the field of entrepreneurship.

USIM, being the only Public University granted with the status Mutawali by the Negeri Sembilan Islamic Religious Council, is permitted to collect and manage waqf funds, hence providing a platform for its alumni to continue making contributions in the form of financial funds, especially towards the development of infrastructure and facilities in the campus.

This was among the statements made by the Vice Chancellor of USIM, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Musa Ahmad, in his meeting with around 100 alumni members of USIM in a friendly get-together event to strengthen ties between the Vice Chancellor and KUIM/USIM East Coast Alumni held in Kelantan Trade Center, Kota Bharu, Kelantan late yesterday afternoon (Saturday).

“Since our first group of alumni was born in 2003, our alumni are now involved in various sectors of the economy. We realise that although they are no longer on campus, our alumni possess the capacity to continue contributing to the University’s development, and waqf is one of the methods of making such contribution.”

“Being aware of this, the University would like to continue building a direct and closer relationship with its alumni. In order to establish a strategic and synergised continuous collaboration between the university and its alumni, USIM has taken the initiative to launch the Jelajah Alumni programme according to zones in the whole country. This exploration series will be carried out in several phases and the East Coast has been selected as the first location for the launch of this exploration series,” said the Vice Chancellor.

“Each year, we receive many applications and the number of students from Kelantan and Terengganu accepted into USIM is very high. Based on our observation, students from the religious schools in both these states have made USIM their ideal university of choice (their first option) to further their education. This scenario brings honour and pride to the University which implement the integration of Naqli-Aqli knowledge as its core educational approach,” he added.

Examples of projects that have been initiated by the University through waqf funding are the setting up of a Health Specialist Centre, a Hemodialysis Centre and an Eye Specialist Mobile Clinic in Bandar Baru Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. The University’s latest waqf development project is the building of students’ residential college.

The participation of the university’s alumni in this exploration series gives a very positive indication that the alumni still possess a strong sense of togetherness and love for the University. The social function, which was organised by Alumni and Career Centre and the USIM Alumni Society, was attended by the University’s Senior Management, among them Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hassan Basri Awang Mat Dahan, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Students Affairs and Alumni); Prof. Dato’ Dr. Zulkiple Abd Ghani, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International); and Encik Muhammad Haizuan Rozali, the Registrar.
