AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND – At just 24 years old, Muhammad Hanif Zakaria, a student from the Faculty of Quranic and Sunnah Studies at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), made history by being appointed as an imam to lead Taraweeh prayers at the Manukau Islamic Youth Centre in Auckland, New Zealand. He departed from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to New Zealand on February 26.
Born in Kelantan and currently pursuing a degree in the Qiraat program, Hanif described his selection as unexpected due to the competitive interview process. “I was surprised but very grateful. This is a golden opportunity – once in a lifetime,” he shared.
Armed with strong aspirations and deep passion, Hanif began his duties as the Taraweeh imam from March 2 to 26. Beyond leading the prayers, he also taught the Quran to the local congregation, making the experience even more meaningful.
Carrying out responsibilities abroad is no easy task. Hanif had to ensure the accuracy of his memorization (hafazan) to lead prayers flawlessly. He also managed various logistical matters such as visa and passport arrangements, in light of New Zealand’s strict entry requirements. “I also practiced speaking English to communicate more effectively in the country,” he added.
Remarkably, this marks his first experience serving at the international level – a challenging yet enriching opportunity full of valuable lessons.
As the first USIM student to serve in New Zealand, Hanif hopes his involvement will open doors for future students. “I want to be a pioneer. Hopefully, more USIM students will have the chance to serve here, and the collaboration between USIM and mosques in New Zealand can continue,” he said.
Hanif also carries with him the heartfelt advice of his parents, who are both teachers: to take care of himself, respect the local community, and uphold the good name of his family and USIM on the international stage.
The inspiring story of Muhammad Hanif Zakaria is a testament to the fact that the teachings of the Quran transcend borders. From Kota Bharu to Auckland, he embraced the responsibility of being a young ambassador of USIM, spreading the message of Islam across the globe.
