Introduction

Jugular Venous Pressure (JVP) is a pressure of a vein that runs in our neck. This vein is directly connected to the upper chamber of the heart. Hence, any increase of pressure in the heart will be reflected to this vein. Therefore, when there’s raised JVP detected, it acts as an early screening that there might be underlying heart problems which requires further investigation.

Function
All this long, the common technique to measure JVP is just by using 2 usual rulers. Based on the measurement, an abnormal range obtained will be more than 4cm. However, in the clinical setting, we face several problems related to this examination. Hence, we created the JVP Ruler; a ruler which is used exclusively to measure JVP.

Advantages
i. A hinge to maintain consistency at 90 degrees
To measure JVP, we need to use two usual rulers and hold them in 90 degrees. This is a hassle since we need to hold the 2 rulers at a consistent position as well as to read the measurement at the same time. Therefore, with our JVP Ruler, we make sure that the hinge can be locked at 90 degrees to ensure the consistency.

ii. A soft pad to ensure patient’s comfort
While performing the examination, using the usual rulers may hurt the patient if the technique is not done properly. To overcome this problem, we equip our JVP Ruler with a soft pad to ensure our patient’s comfort.

iii. A sliding part with an accurate measurement
Most rulers do not start with zero and have spaces below it. Hence, to get a correct reading is difficult as we need to cut the ruler edge first before we can get the actual reading. To solve this problem, we make sure that the sliding part of our JVP Ruler starts from 0cm so the reading can be obtained immediately.

iv. Normal range and abnormal range as user’s reference
There’s also a possibility that the users forget the normal and the abnormal range of the measurement. With our JVP Ruler, there’s no need for the users to worry anymore since we have included a reference range for our JVP Ruler users.

Our JVP ruler has a foldable 90 degrees arm, which is patient-friendly, convenient and light. The size is just nice to be kept in the pocket so the users can easily bring it anywhere they go. The best part is that as for now, there’s no other ruler available in the market which is exclusively created to measure JVP like the one we has created.

We hope that our JVP Ruler will be a compulsory kit for medical examination to all health professionals throughout the world.
