PENANG, 22 August, 2017 –The Novel Research & Innovation Competition 2017 (NRIC) held in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) from 15th to 17th August 2017 brought much success to the team from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM). Out of 6 entries, USIM bagged 1 gold prize, 1 Special Award (Best Presenter Award), 1 silver, and 2 bronze prizes.
The product Double Layered Roof Cooling System Controlled (Technology Engineering Category) emerged tops and earned a gold prize whilst Ms. Ainul Husna binti Yusoff won a Special Award as Best Presenter Award, bringing home a trophy, a certificate, and a cash prize of RM750.
The Double Layered Roof Cooling System Controlled is a cooling system that uses solar energy to benefit a particular building through its ability to cool the building to a comfortable temperature and then consistently maintain such temperature through the automatic function of its system.
According to Ainul Husna, this product can also reduce usage of electrical power as the system works for the entire building as compared to the features of the typical air conditioner which can only cool the areas within the vicinity where it is installed.
“The design of this product took about one year to complete, with emphasis placed on incorporating environmentally friendly aspects, while simultaneously giving benefits to a particular building such as to the occupants of a residential house, factory, or even at cowsheds,” she added.
23-year-old Ainul Husna, who is a final year student in Applied Physics from the Faculty of Science and Techonlogy, did not expect to emerge as winner given the stiff competition from other participants, both local and international.
“All praise to Allah, all of this is granted by Him. My heartfelt thanks to my parents and family members who gave me a lot of support during my participation in this competition. I’m also grateful to my group members for their co-operation and contribution of ideas towards our presentation on the day of the competition, and to my supervising advisor, Dr. Mohd Azman bin Hashim@Ismail who gave plenty of advice and guidance towards our preparations. Not forgetting the lecturers at USIM especially the lecturers of Applied Physics who have always been very supportive,” she said.
When asked to reveal the secret of her success, Ainul shared that she often held discussions with her team members apart from taking in useful input when she attended the NRIC preparation workshop. Additionally, she took the time to perform mock presentations in front of her family members who come from different academic backgrounds, and she also practiced hard with her team members.
Other award-winning products were YAMMEE (Social Transformation and Creative Art Category) which bagged a silver prize while two other products, Dentolight (Medical and Health Science Category) and Qalam Khat (Social Transformation and Creative Art Category) emerged as winners of bronze medals. Al-Quran Waterproof and Fiqh for Disabled Persons Modul are the two other products which were also entered into the competition.
