NILAI, 17 December 2018 – The Barakah Appreciation Ceremony with the theme Ummah Economic Sustainability organized by the Waqf and Zakat Centre, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), honored its 16 donors and zakat contributors from individuals, organizations and departments in USIM.

Prof. Madya Dr. Wan Abdul Fattah Wan Ismail, Director of PWZ USIM said that such a ceremony will be held annually to appreciate contributors who are equally dedicated to helping alleviate the burden of the students and the less fortunate USIM staff while not forgetting the needs of the local communities.

In the speech of YBhg Prof Dato Dr Musa Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor of USIM, the intention of this waqf project is partly for the development of facilities, building residential colleges in the campus to accommodate the students without the need to stay out of campus in the future as well as to assist asnaf students through educational waqf, endowment and others.

“In the second quarter of 2018, USIM has channeled its zakat aid to 617 students amounting to RM575,529.00. In the same quarter, a total of RM147,900.00 zakat funds were channeled to 16 da’wah programs and seminars while the end of the year, the distribution of zakat aid amounting to RM431,900 was channeled to 529 students,” he added.

At the ceremony, the Negeri Sembilan Islamic Religious Council received the Abdurrahman Ibn Auf Award as the largest waqf contributor of RM 1,500,000.00 while Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad received the Utsman Ibn Affan Award as the largest contributor of zakat of RM 1,000,000.00.

Other organizations that also contribute are Permodalan Nasional Berhad, Prudential BSN Takaful Berhad, Ambank Islamic, Celcom Mobile, Perumahan Kinrara Berhad, QSR Brands, MBSB Bank Berhad, Maybank Islamic Berhad, Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council, Selangor Zakat Board, AAKH Development Sdn Bhd , Alliance Bank Malaysia Berhad, Global Learnext and Bidadari Exclusive.

Also present was the delivery of mock-checks of zakat distribution to staff amounting to RM14,775.00 received by the representative of USIM Staff Welfare Board chairman, Mr Muin bin Yahaya, and then a mock-check of RM 431,900.00 for asnaf students.

PWZ also introduced Ambassadors to assist promotional activities through written publications, broadcasts on electronic media and as speakers / spokespersons in campaign sessions in an effort to enhance waqf and zakat collection at USIM PWZ. They are Prof. Madya Dr. Nik Salida Suhaila and Dr. Anuar Hasin of Syariah and Law Faculty and Ustaz Mohd Hariri, Assistant Director of Syariah Index Unit of Malaysia, Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (JAKIM).
